HIGHER SECONDARY COURSE (+2)
The council of Higher Secondary Education CHSE, Orissa, (or +2) has introduced new course structure for +2 (Arts, Science, Commerce) classes from the Academic Session 2006 - 2007 & this has been concurred by the Govt. Vide No. 14321 / III HE - CHSE - 10/06 Dt. 27.04.06. All the colleges have been intimated the new course structure by the CHSE, Orissa vide letter NO. 4154/CHSE Dt. 01.05.2006.

The Environmental Education (EE) will be assessed at the college level for 100 marks (70 theory & 30 project work) at the end of 1st year. The examination shall be conducted at the end of the 1st year by the college. According to the performance of the students grades shall be awarded as A,B, C or D in order of merit by the college and it shall be recorded in the pass certificate given by the council, However the grades secured in the (EE) will not affect the results of the candidates.

Duration of Course
The duration of courses is for 2 yrs. Each subject is be divided into two parts, 1st year & 2nd yr. carrying 100 marks each. Each subject shall be covered up within two years (100 Marks).

Examination Procedure
According to the new course structure there shall be one Examination to be conducted by the college at the end of 1st year basing on the curriculum meant for that year and other examination at the end of 2nd year to be conducted by the council basing on the curriculum for that year.
The Examination at the end of 1st year shall be for 700 marks (including 100 marks EE) and the examination at the end of 2nd year shall be for 600 marks. Marks secured in the 1st year shall be considered for promotion to the 2nd year class. The results of a candidate will be determined only on the performance of the candidate in the council examination to be held at the end of the 2nd year course.


PASS CRITERIA
Pass marks shall be 30% of the total marks in theory paper & 40% of the total marks in practical paper, in each subject with 35% of the total marks in aggregates.

Subjects with Practical
33% of the total marks shall be for practical exam. and remaining 70% for theory. A candidate has to pass separately in theory & practical. Pass marks of Biology shall be calculated taking to gather the marks secured in both Botany & Zoology. With the introduction of new course structure, there shall be no extra optional subject. However a candidate has to offer four elective subjects as mentioned above in the course structure.
 

THREE YEAR DEGREE COURSE (+3)

New course structure has been adopted from the session 2002-2003. The course pattern in respect of all the three faculties is given later. The tables make it clear about the subjects available in this College. (See Page 32 to 36)

An applicant has to opt. a third elective in case he is offering Mass Communication (MC) for establishing merit (see the table at the page No. 32 for pass on page No. 33 for Hons.) A Student Cannot offer Elective that corresponds to his/her pass or honours subjects. For Example a student offering History (pass/honours) cannot take LMIH as elective.

EXTRACTS FROM THE BERHAMPUR UNIVERSITY REGULATION FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS, SCIENCE AND COMMERCE (THREE YEAR DEGREE COURSE) WITH EFFECT FROM 2002- 2003
(Effective for students admitted to First year of +3 course during 2002-2003 and after wards.
1.1 The Three year Degree Course leading to the Bachelor's degree in Arts/Science/Commerce of Berhampur University shall be spread over a period of three academic years. A candidate for the Bachelor's degree in Arts/Science/Commerce shall be required to pass the following examination.
i) First University Examination at the end of 1st year
ii) Second University Examination at the end of 2nd year.
iii) Final University Examination at the end of 3rd year.

1.2 A Candidate shall be eligible to appear the second and final University examination only if he/she has registered for the first and / second University examination respectively. She has passed in the First and Second University Examination respectively.
2.9 A candidate, whose results of Higher Secondary Examination are published late by the examining authority, may be admitted into the College within the weeks of the publication of his/her results depending on the availability of seats provided that no student can be admitted into +3 1st year class beyond 31st December of the concerned academic year.

CHANGE OF SUBJECTS
3. A candidate who has been admitted into a college with particular subject (s) or combination of subjects into the first year may be allowed to change subject (s) or combination of subjects by the Principal till thirty days after the last date of admission into first year course as prescribed in the provision of the clause 2 of regulation.

QUALIFICATION FOR ADMISSION TO THE FIRST SECOND AND FINAL EXAMINATIONS
4.1 Any registered student of the University may be admitted into the First year Examination if he /she has completed in one or more colleges admitted for the purpose of such examination in the subjects which he/she offers a regular course of study for not less than one academic year after passing the Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Orissa or any other examination recognised by CHSE, orissa and Berhampur University as equivalent there to, provided he is not otherwise ineligible to appear the said examination.
4.2 Any registered student of the University may be admitted to the second Examination for the Bachelor's Degree in Arts/Science /Commerce if he/she has cleared the first examination in the concerned stream or has appeared the said examination and has thereafter completed a regular course of study for not less than one academic year in the second year course in one or more colleges admitted for the purpose of such examination in the subjects which he/she offers, provided that he/she is not otherwise ineligible for appearing the said examination.
4.3 Any registered student of the University may be admitted to the Final examination for the Bachelor's Degree in Arts/Science/Commerce if he/she has cleared the second examination in the concerned stream or has appeared the said examination and has thereafter completed a regular course of study for not less than one academic year in the third year course in one or more colleges admitted for the purpose of such examination in the subjects which he/she offers, provided that he/she is not otherwise ineligible for appearing the said examination.
4.4 In order to clear an examination (First/Second/Final) a candidate is required to secure 30 % marks in a subject and 40 % in each practical paper.

PASS MARKS AND CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES :
5.1 Aggregate marks for passing the degree examination shall be the sum total of the aggregate of First, Second and Final examination taken together.
5.2.1 Class will be awarded on the following basis.

Pass

A minimum of 30 % in each subject and A minimum of 36 % of marks in the aggregate.

Pass with Distinction

A minimum of 30 % in each subject and a minimum of 50 % of marks in the aggregate in first appearance.
Pass without Honours

A minimum of 30 % in each subject and
A minimum 36 % in aggregate in subjects other than Honours and less than 45 % but not less then 36 % in honours subject.
Pass without Honours with Distinction

A minimum of 30 % in each subject and A minimum 36 % in aggregate in subjects other than Honours and a minimum of 50 % in aggregate for pass and Honours subjects combined.
Second Class Honours

A minimum of 30 % in each subject and a minimum of 36 % in aggregate in subjects other than Honours and a minimum of 45 % marks or more but less than 60 % in Honours subject.
Second Class. Honours with Distinction

In addition to 2nd class Honours a minimum of 50% marks secured in subjects other than Honours in first appearance.

First Class Honours

A minimum of 30 % in each subject and a minimum of 36 % in aggregate in subjects other than Honours and a minimum of 60 % or more in Honours.

First class Honours With Distinction.

In addition to First Class Honours a  Minimum of 50 % Marks in aggregate in subjects other than Honours in first appearance.

5.2.2 In each of the above examination for subjects having practical a candidate, in order to pass, must have secured a minimum of 30 % of marks in theory paper(s) taken together in a subject and a minimum of 40% marks in practical paper other than Honours subjects provided he/she has secured the minimum aggregate mark.
5.2.3 In each of the above examination for subjects having practical, a candidate, in order to secure Honours, must have secured a minimum of 45% of marks in practical paper (S) taken together in Honours subject.
5.3.A If candidate is marked absent in any sitting (s) of an examination, such a candidate shall have to reappear in that paper (s) in order that his/her results are declared.
b. A candidate failing to secure a minimum of 30 % in pass subject and /or a minimum of 40 % in each practical paper either in the First, second or Final Examination of this University may be allowed to appear in those subjects in not more than two chances (examinations) immediately following that examination for which he was first registered, to clear the back paper(s) on payment of prescribed fees.
However, if a candidate who has not cleared an examination may at his option, appear in all the papers of that examination under the following conditions.
i) Marks secured by the candidates in that examination earlier stands cancelled.
ii) After exercising the option to appear in all papers of an examination, if a candidate fails to clear that examination, he/she will be required to appear in all the
papers of that examination in a subsequent chance, within 5 years of first registration for First degree examination.


C. If a candidate has appeared in back papers in the first chance and in all the papers in the second chance and also has failed, such a candidate can appear at that examination (in all the papers) under new course only within 5 years of 1st registration to First degree examination.
D. If the candidate fails to secure the pass marks in the aggregate (under regulation 5.2) he/she may reappear in one or more subjects / paper(s) of his choice from either the First Second or Final Examination to make up the deficiency. This chance shall be available to a candidate in maximum two subsequent chances (examinations) only following the final Examination in which he/she was first registered but within 5 years of 1 st registration to First degree examination.
E.1. Candidates who have been duly admitted to B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. (Honours) (3 year degree course) examination of the Berhampur University and have obtained only a Second Class (Hons.) or passed without Honours can reappear at any examination for Hons. papers only of his/her choice to improve their results within two subsequent chances (Examinations), an application submitted through the Principal of a College affiliated to Berhampur University in the subject upto the Honours level. The higher marks in each paper shall be taken into consideration for determining their results and divisions. However, distinctions if earned by the candidate shall not be effected by improvement examination under the clause.
ii. Provided that a candidate shall be allowed to improve his /her performance in theory papers only and once after passing B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. (3 years degree course) Examination of Berhampur University.
iii. A candidate who wishes to improve performance in Hons. shall be required to fill in application form and pay the requisite fees accordingly.
iv. Collegiate candidates taking this advantage be treated as regular candidates and will be examined on the basis of current syllabus.
v. The expression "subject" shall include all the papers comprised in the subject.
F. Provided further that in no case a candidate shall be allowed to appear any examination after 5 years of first registration to first University examination.

9.2 A candidate in B.A. (Hons.) shall offer a Honours subject carrying 800 marks and two elective subjects besides compulsory subjects. Each elective subject shall consist of two papers each carrying 100 marks. Each Hons. subjects shall consist of 8 papers each carrying 100 marks. In Hons. subject having practical component Paper - V and Paper VIII are practical of 100 marks each. In Mathematics P -VIII is either practical or theory.
10. A candidate (Hons. or Pass) shall choose two elective subjects, each carrying 200 marks (without any practical component) from the following subjects or other subjects. Indian polity, Indian Economy, Landmarks in Indian History , Mathematics, Oriya, Philosophy, Mass Communication, provided that a student in Hons. or Pass cannot offer the corresponding subject as elective.

12.2 A B.Sc. (Hons) student shall choose an Honours subject carrying 800 marks. One Pass subject carrying 400 marks, one minor elective carrying 100 marks and one major elective carrying 200 marks consisting of two papers each carrying 100 marks. Besides Compulsory papers. Subject (s) with Practical shall carry 75% theory and 25 % practical. In Hons. subjects having Practical components, Paper - V and Paper - VIII as practical of 100 marks each. In Mathematics paper - VIII is either practical or theory.
13.1 Minor Elective Papers : In science (both Honours and Pass), a student with Life Science (Botany/zoology etc.) as Pass or Honours shall take one Minor Elective Paper on "Mathematics for Biology students" carrying 100 marks where as the other student (of Physical Sciences) shall take " Biology for Physical Sciences students" as minor Elective carrying 100 marks.
13.2 A B. Sc. (Pass) student shall choose one subject as Major Elective from among the following subjects or other subject (s). Carrying 200 marks with two papers of 100 marks each (without any Practical component). Biotechnology , Material Science , Mathematics, Provided that a student (Hons. or Pass ) choosing any of the subject like, Life Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, as Honours or Pass shall not be allowed to offer corresponding subject as a major Elective paper.
14.2 Elective subjects shall not carry any Practical component.
14.3 A candidate shall be allowed to offer any one of the following MIL i.e Oriya, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu and Urdu, Provided that a candidate shall be allowed to offer Alternate English in lieu of MIL.

Dropping of Honours Course
18. A candidate taking Honours course initially in a subject may choose in writing to drop the Honours course and adopt the pass course in the same subject at the time of submitting his application for the First Examination or earlier and he/she then appear subsequent examination.
19. Migration
Any candidate who has been registered as such in any other University of the state will be permitted to migrate to this University to register either for the First, Second or Final Examination of this University. In such case the marks obtained by him/her in the First or Second Examination, as the case may be, of the other University will be taken as the marks obtained by him/her for the result as per the provision of the regulation Act and statute.
The Tables given below gives a clear idea of the subjects. The students have to choose in respect of 1st year students, to pursue the Degree course.
